CAS Number 1314-35-8
Tungsten oxide (CAS number 1314-35-8), also known as tungsten trioxide, is a metal oxide with a monoclinic crystal structure. Tungsten oxide is a well-known material for use in electrochromic glass (also referred to smart windows), as its transparency changes upon the application of voltage. The electrochromism occurs when the photons are absorbed in the tungsten oxide layer, causing electrons to move between nearby metal ions, after W6+ receives electrons from the electrodes.
Tungsten oxide has also found its application in perovskite solar cells, as an interfacial passivation layer. Tungsten oxide suppresses the charge recombination in solar cells, leading to an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.7%, compared to PCE of 9.75% without tungsten oxide.
Tungsten oxide is also used in photocatalysis for the 100% selective formation of formaldehyde from methane and water.
