Unlike most narrow bandgap non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), IO-4Cl is a medium/wide bandgap n-type non-fullerene semiconductor bearing an electron rich indacenodithieno-[3,2-b]thiophene (also known as ITIC core). It has a similar structure to ITIC-4Cl, but the electron-accepting units are composed of two carbonyl units while ITIC-4Cl has one carbonyl group and one more electron-withdrawing malononitrile group.

IO-4Cl is relatively blue-shifted in absorption when compared to ITIC-4Cl, with an absorption band centred at 500 - 700 nm in the visible light region. IO-4Cl is known for indoor organic photovoltaic (IOPV) applications. When IO-4Cl:PM6 blend is used as the active layer materials, PCEs of over 26% under 1000 lux LED or FC have been achieved. The IOPVs photovoltaic cells maintained most of their initial PCE after 1000 hours under continuous indoor illumination with the following device structure [1].
