COOH Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
COOH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) are multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxylic acid groups attached on the surface of the nanotubes. MWCNT-COOH can be prepared by reacting pristine MWCNTs with a mixture of HNO3:H2SO4 (1:3 volume ratio). Compared to pristine MWCNTs, COOH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes provide better dispersibility in solvents and polymer resins. The homogeneous MWCNT-COOH composites reduce the mechanical defects, leading to improved tensile and compressive strength.
Other than improving the dispersity of MWCNTs in solution, carboxylic acid groups can interact with other materials. For example, MWCNT-COOH can form hydrogen bonds with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in solid state lithium batteries. The intermolecular interaction reduces the crystallinity of PEO, improving the migration abilities of lithium ion. A lithium battery cell, containing MWCNT-COOH, exhibits a capacity of 150 mAh/g at 0.5 C-rate at 120 °C, and a capacity retention of nearly 100% after 100 charge and discharge cycles.
