OH Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
OH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-OH, CAS number 308068-56-6) are derivatives of MWCNTs bearing hydroxy groups. MWCNT-OH can be obtained by treating pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes with acid. MWCNT-OHs have improved dispersibility in solvents and polymer resins, owing to the hydrogen bonding interactions from their hydroxy groups. This increased interaction with the surrounding system leads to enhanced electrical and mechanical properties.
With a 0.5% loading of OH-MWCNTs, an epoxy composite exhibit 14.2% enhancement in tensile strength. It also has 34% increase in its glass transition temperature, expanding the working window from 77.8°C to 103.2°C. OH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes can be deposited as an anode in a self-powered biofuel cell. The biofuel cell can generate a maximum powder density of 250 µW/cm2 with an open-circuit voltage of 0.46 V. With the ability to trap electrons, MWCNT-OHs are used as an electrode in electrocatalysis, demonstrating a rate constant of the heterogeneous electron transfer of 25.9 × 10−4 cm·s−1.
