Iron oxide (Fe3O4), CAS number 1317-61-9, is a type of iron oxide containing both iron (II) and iron (III) ions, also written as FeO·Fe2O3. Fe3O4. It occurs in nature as the mineral magnetite, exhibiting ferrimagnetism.

Iron oxide powder has been used as pigments, catalysts, and contrast agents in MRI scanning. More recently, iron oxide nanopowder is used as anode materials with carbon-based materials. These composite anode materials demonstrate a specific capacity of 980 mAh/g at a fast-charging rate of 4C with outstanding cycling stability.

Also used as a catalyst in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), this Cu-FeOOH/Fe3O4 exhibits excellent stability and a low overpotential of 285 mV at 500 mA/cm2 for alkaline HER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the catalyst decreases the energy barrier of water dissociation and hydrogen generation, enabling efficient HER.
